Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Asia News & Markets Correspondent, who will report directly to the East Asia Editor, and help shape our editorial output in the crypto space. 

You will produce fresh, innovative content around cryptocurrency market and technology developments, including coverage of onchain and offchain market developments. Working alongside our analysts and editors, you will generate news articles in English about Bitcoin, major altcoins and other tokens, focusing on explaining why assets are moving and breaking news that has market impact. Stories will incorporate a variety of perspectives, including insights from a macroeconomic lens when relevant. 

You will blend short news briefs with occasional in-depth features that broaden readers’ understanding of the crypto universe and its global context and may contribute to opinion and analysis pieces. 
 
Sandmark is an ideal platform for candidates aspiring to be among the most followed and respected crypto market reporters. You must possess a healthy scepticism of industry narratives and be comfortable applying a 'critical lens' to project founders, venture capital 'pump' cycles, and regulatory gatekeeping to fit with Sandmark's high standards. The role has a geographical base (Asia) although the successful candidate will be able to develop regional or topic beat specialisms through this role. 
 
The role requires autonomous source cultivation as well as covering certain industry events, political and regulatory factors that affect crypto markets and insights from a macroeconomic lens when relevant. Candidates seeking to generate copy from the desk without interacting with human sources should not apply.

Key Responsibilities

Research & Writing 

• Monitor crypto assets/markets and track breaking crypto market news and macroeconomic events, identifying relevant angles for original reporting.
• Follow crypto’s impact on emerging markets, global policy shifts, and cross-market implications.
• Create innovative story ideas and pitch ideas to editors for new ways of reporting that distinguish our information service from the crowd.
• Produce a mix of concise news pieces and more creative, insightful long-form articles.
• Verify facts and data through internal resources, leveraging in-house analysts’ support for market research and macroeconomic perspectives.

Editorial Process Collaboration 

• Collaborate closely with editors to refine story angles and maintain a high standard of quality.
• Liaise with other reporters and in-house analysts to ensure pieces reflect broader market trends and context.
• Work with photographers and videographers for any multimedia components. 

Content Strategy & Distribution 

• Offer creative ideas and contribute to related social media content to maximize article reach and engagement.
• Produce content in line with related SEO objectives and content analytics to enhance visibility.
• Manage multiple deadlines and adhere to a schedule comprising a combination of breaking news and longer form features.

Teamwork & development 

• Communicate clearly with editors, freelancers and content writers to help ensure an efficient and punctual newsroom.
• Set personal development goals and benefit from working with experienced editorial staff and other functions.

Standards, Ethics & Compliance 

• Be self-motivated to maintain/exceed high standards of journalism
• Follow the house editorial policy and guidelines.
• Be sensitive to legal and regulatory considerations and follow guidance from editors.

Qualifications

Experience & Expertise

• Proven background in reporting or writing on cryptocurrency, finance, or macroeconomic topics.
• Interest in exploring conventional and unconventional crypto angles, focusing on broader market connections.
• A portfolio of writing that demonstrates your ability to blend accurate reporting with engaging, original storytelling. 

Education 

• Formal degree in Journalism, Economics, Finance, or related fields is beneficial but not mandatory.
• Extensive professional experience may substitute for formal education.

Skills & Tools 

• Outstanding writing and editing skills, adaptable to short-form and long-form contexts.
• Familiarity with/awareness of SEO best practices, basic website CMS experience, and analytics tools.
• Exceptional organizational skills to juggle simultaneous projects and meet deadlines.
• Strong English-language skills, including an ability to produce copy ready for editing.
• Other languages may strengthen your application, especially if relevant to news-gathering from online sources and people active in crypto markets.
• Experience interviewing sources a plus.

Soft Skills

• Ability to operate inside ad dynamic newsroom setting, receptive to collaboration and constructive feedback.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, vital for cross-team collaboration with editors and analysts.
• Curiosity and creativity to explore emerging, less-covered topics in the crypto world.
